This workshop will explore, both theoretically and experientially, major aspects of ancient and contemporary shamanism and their integration into contemporary psychology, therapy and counselling.

Christa will briefly examine and explain the underlying concepts and world-views of indigenous and contemporary shamanism, tying them in with current developments in psychology and science. She will clarify and discuss basic concepts such as the integrative wholeness of mind, body, soul and spirit, altered states of perception and the idea of  transformative healing approaches
in the field of shamanism in contrast to ‘symptom diagnosis and alleviation’ in contemporary psychology and therapy. The main focus of the workshop will be on discovering experientially how indigenous wisdom traditions, developed and adjusted to the contemporary therapeutic, can offer practitioners a highly effective repertoire of psycho-spiritual transpersonal approaches and therapeutic tools, which can be utilised for self-development as well as with clients. Approaches and tools might include journeying, ceremonial work, guides and animal helpers, ancestral work, myths and stories, nature and, time permitting, some medicine wheel teachings.

Christa holds a teaching fellowship at Exeter University, Medical School. She is a Fellow of the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis, a founder member of the British Society of Medical Hypnosis, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and a member of the Society of Authors.
